WordPress 12 Step Guide by LairdPage
Pre-Website Development Stage 1
Step 1 – Purchase the domain name for your website
This is the name that identifies your website. People will type this into the browser URL bar to visit your website. Keep it as short as possible so its easy to remember!
Who we recommend?
We have been using Godaddy for all our domain names and highly recommend them.
Step 2 – Purchase a professional hosting package
You need to find a web host to store your files (website). We recommend using a hosting provider that uses SSD servers, good security and professional support.
Step 3 – Change the Name-Servers to point to your host
Login to your domain account, and look for DNS management. Your hosting provider would have given you the DNS records. Delete the current name-servers and replace them with the new ones.
We can do this for you.
If you provide us with your domain login details we can change them for you. You can always change the login details after!
Step 4 – Send your Host Login details to LairdPage
To start your website send us the login details from your hosting provider. This enables us to create your new WordPress website by installing all the necessary files including a theme and plugins.
Start Building your website
You could install the WordPress demo website yourself from the cpanel but we can also do this for you. We could even set up your email address while there!
Dev. Process Stage 2
Step 5 – Install and set up a WordPress theme
We only use the lightest themes that look good without compromising on appearance and usability. All themes set up by LairdPage are responsive with professional support with guaranteed updates.
Which Theme do we use?
Our preference goes to the default Gutenberg & KadenceWP due to their simplicity and ultra clean coding for fast loading.
Step 6 – Install and set up Elementor/Kadence Page Builder
With 100% clean code Elementor and Kadence can create just about any website you visualise and we have used them on many sites. Websites also load faster with editing that can be done on the front-end.
Step 7 – Create and Add the Relevant Pages to a Menu
Add your pages such as about us, services, testimonials, frequently asked questions and a contact form connected to your email address including a menu for visitor navigation.
The most important pages
These pages provide the necessary information to your visitor and recommended on every site. Once you provide us the information we will add this for you.
Step 8 – Set up the Categories and Posts Including Featured Images
Build a site structure by adding categories to sort your content into relevant topics/posts. This gives you the flexibility to showcase the posts you want within any page or in the menu.
Tell us your categories
Once we know the categories we can add the posts and build a structure for your website. This helps visitors navigate and find the relevant topics.
Step 9 – Add an SEO Plugin to Optimise it for Search Engines
Add an SEO – search engine optimise plugin to create titles, descriptions and XML sitemap enabling your website to be indexed in search engines the way you want it to based on your keywords.
Step 10 – Add and Set Up a Cache Plugin for Page load Speed
Enhance the speed and performance to make your website faster and reduce the load on your web server. A faster loading website is also favourable in getting a better page rank in Google etc.
Step 11 – Connect your website to social media platforms
Connecting websites to your social media platforms will help it to grow more followers and promote your online brand. We can create the buttons to link to your social media pages.
Simply send us your Social Media Pages
All the popular social media platforms such as FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube etc can all easily be connected to your site.
Step 12 – Hand the Website over to you for ownership
After all the hard work, we will hand over your website and create an administrator role under your name and email address. Don’t forget, we’re always there for technical support.
This is the best part
In most cases the design and build will take place on our local server and once it’s on your host, we hand it over. But it’s not the end. We’re always around to support you!
